Billy Elliot: Ranking the Top 5 Theater Shows
Have you, perhaps, wanted to watch a heartwarming performance, a story that truly moves you? Then perhaps nothing beats the sheer emotion and brilliance of “Billy Elliot” onstage. The story is that it follows a young boy’s passion for ballet, setting it against the backdrop of the 1984-85 miners’ strike. With such incredible performances happening one would really enjoy to catch this London Theater show! I think picking the ‘best’ performances is sort of tricky, that is because everyone brings something special to the role. Yet, there’re some shows that just seem to soar to incredible new heights, really etching themselves into memory. Now, lets get on to this top 5!
#1. The Original London Production (2005)
At the top of my list it’s almost, but surely is, the original London production that began back in 2005 at the Victoria Palace Theatre. I think this is because there’s just something that’s special ’bout the first production of any hit musical. The buzz, you know, that excitement around seeing something brand-new. Then there were the incredible performances by the three original Billys – James Lomas, George Maguire, and Liam Mower. Witness the original magic. Seeing those young lads carry that show, belting it out with so much heart and talent, felt pretty remarkable. It sort of set the standard for all future productions, I suppose.
The choreography, too, it was created by Peter Darling, a display of the raw emotion and energy that would be amazing and now known in the play. It really left audiences in awe. And the music? This was the legendary Elton John; it just amplified the emotional impact, solidifying its place, and very much making itself know in theatrical history.
#2. The Broadway Premiere (2008)
Taking the second slot, it just has to be the Broadway debut in 2008 at the Imperial Theatre. Making its transition across the pond it just confirmed its status you see as a global phenomenon. And, very much like the original, it wasn’t just one but three young actors—David Álvarez, Trent Kowalik, and Kiril Kulish—sharing the important part of Billy. Experience broadway. Their fresh energy, when combined with the very talented Broadway cast, just brought another layer of magic, you know, to the stage.
Interestingly enough, what stood out with this showing it may be that they increased production value which seemed a bit bigger. Not to forget how elaborate the sets seemed to be, and you can say it really took the viewing experience up another notch. The choreography was the same as the London production, a lot of fans appreciated that, while bringing its own unique spirit, with the new talent involved.Experience the broadway sensation!
#3. Billy Elliot the Musical Live (2014)
Now, who would think to catch “Billy Elliot the Musical Live,” I think maybe lots of people since it just took the third spot. Recorded at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, this filming had something for everyone and had the chance to deliver an pretty fantastic experience to home viewers. The recording, while you may know, celebrated the tenth anniversary. It had the inclusion of Liam Mower—one of the first Billys—as Older Billy and it was very remarkable indeed, you know. This gave a really heartwarming touch and had everyone in shock that one of the originals still had the skill.
I would describe it as an expertly shot recording that just meant the emotion came alive like it was live. Whether you weren’t in a local theatre to attend the show, or you may want to bring your love to home, the recording did not hold back on any aspect and was more or less fantastic for anyone.
#4. The Australian Production (2007)
Bursting onto the stage in 2007, that Australian production, very clearly in fourth, premiered in Sydney and that went to Melbourne, showing just how far this play could reach and how global it would become. The set had a lot of promising newcomers who really worked at nailing the role; those new young actors such as Rhys Kosakowski and Rarmond Messam had such a unique sense of Australian charm, watch it come alive!
A lot of watchers say that Australian performances were so heartwarming, even so very energetic. They are usually compared to that original one from London since it really brings out the story. That being the struggles of miners and really going for a better life.
#5. North American Tour (2010)
And making up our list, but yet is far from the least, it may be that we have to shout out that North American tour that started in 2010. Traveling all through the USA and Canada, it seems so that it touched a lot of hearts and it really resonated among people all across different locations. What could be so nice, even, about it is the amount of talent that were young which were so well refined! Also is that they knew how the stage works even as very skilled people; what a joy that is I believe! This show did feature a lot of great dance moves that traveled all over America!
What’s cool, I find is they show cased those brilliant dance performances for a new audience. This helps further it to just touch new groups which, when you compare it, to even the earlier performance. And since these messages have all been so great, each having it’s special bit, many really would appreciate watching any of them, yet.
