Oban, Glencoe & Highlands Tour Review: Is it Worth It?

Oban Harbour

So, you’re possibly pondering a day trip from Glasgow that hits the highlights: Oban, Glencoe, plus the Highlands’ gorgeous lochs and iconic castles? The ‘Oban, Glencoe, Highlands Lochs & Castles Small Group Day Tour’ is quite a popular option. This piece offers a good look, plus my personal take, to assist you in deciding whether it’s the right adventure for you. I had a fantastic time!

What’s Included in the Tour?

Eilean Donan Castle Scotland

The tour kind of packs a punch, with a schedule brimming with Scotland’s finest views. Generally, it involves transportation in a comfy mini-bus – quite significant for those winding Highland roads, to be honest. You’ll discover spots like:

  • Glencoe: Witness the atmospheric valley that’s layered in a quite dark, and compelling history.
  • Loch Lomond: Quite a picturesque loch. A common stop includes the pretty village of Luss.
  • Oban: ‘Gateway to the Isles,’ which offers seafood and views.
  • Castle stop: Usually Eilean Donan Castle – one of the famous, and picture-perfect castles in Scotland.

Keep in mind that admission fees aren’t typically covered, so factor in just a little extra cost, is that fair? What’s more, you might discover added stops or viewpoint breaks along the way; these tour guides do have a knack for uncovering places off the beaten path!

The Glencoe Experience: History and Beauty

Glencoe Scotland Mountains

Glencoe. The name might just send chills down your spine, or maybe that’s just the wind whistling through those dramatic peaks. Its fame stems as much from its startling scenery, as its somewhat tragic past. The massacre of 1692, that’s a nasty episode where members of Clan Campbell murdered their hosts, the MacDonalds. Pretty brutal. As I was saying, our tour guide gave quite a vivid account. In some respects, it honestly made the area resonate, adding depth to the views. The mountains tell their own tales of a challenging, rugged area, so too it’s almost humbling.

From a photography point, Glencoe doesn’t let down. Whatever the weather conditions, whether it’s shrouded in mist or blasted by sunlight, the area just lends itself to amazing shots. In a way, there is an actual atmosphere about it that some places struggle to compete with. We stopped at one of the most famous viewpoints that, despite the presence of what must have been every tourist on Earth, allowed me a bit of space and time to truly capture the essence of this special place. It’s definitely a spot to simply take in the atmosphere, anyway, because the views themselves are awe-inspiring.

Oban: A Taste of the Coast

Oban Distillery Scotland

Oban, a lovely coastal town, acts as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’, yet provides plenty to explore in its own right. Personally, I just loved walking round Oban. So, yes, the fish and chips are amazing, definitely seek that out. This city is pretty popular because it’s where many tours will schedule a stop for lunch, giving you enough time to eat and explore. Arguably, you could visit the Oban Distillery, which produces scotch with an aroma that echoes the sea air of the coast. I wasn’t in a position to take the trip this time but that gives me an awesome reason to return! So there are lots of stores and boutiques just perfect for picking up gifts or that memento, by the way.

Take a walk up McCaig’s Tower if you have just a little extra energy, too it’s almost. This monument, at the top of Battery Hill, seems to be styled on the Colosseum in Rome and provides amazing views out over Oban and the Firth of Lorn. It took a while to reach the top but that view! Well worth it. In some respects, Oban has a more calm feel when compared to the Highlands’ rough charm. Maybe this contributes to why so many visitors rate the town as their favorite on their tour of Scotland.

Lochs and Castles: Iconic Scottish Scenery

Loch Lomond Scotland

You can’t honestly have a tour of the Scottish Highlands without lochs and castles! These trips do usually stop at Loch Lomond, that is just beautiful, especially when the sun’s shining and it appears to glitter. The tour often takes you through Luss, which has got that conservation village vibe and amazing views across the loch. From this point you get a feel of just how massive the Loch really is, too it’s almost. Plus you can see Ben Lomond on the East shore.

Eilean Donan Castle usually makes the itinerary, for example, or very like it! The location is stunning where 3 lochs meet. Did you know that it’s appeared in films such as Highlander and James Bond, anyway? As a matter of fact, that history of its own, the one of rebellion, Jacobites and restoration, provides something to think about as you stroll around the place and that’s really appealing. While certain tours may provide admission, many don’t include entrance fees in the price. So, very often, you need to decide whether it’s worth it at each castle you stop at.

Small Group Experience: Is It Better?

Highland Cow Scotland

One of the top selling factors is that ‘small group’ aspect of the trip. So you can see, that there are a number of benefits. A smaller bus tends to access thinner, scenic routes which some big coaches couldn’t even attempt, right? So, that’s a definite advantage. The atmosphere will often be that of a more personalized setting because the guide could give greater care and attention to people within the group. It keeps things, what should I say, cozy, really. On my trip, the group did bond so much that we actually shared photos and suggested additional stops to see that may have benefited us all. Another selling point is that these small groups are environmentally sound too!

I’d advise to check, what may seem like a “small group,” because this is really quite a subjective term. Actually ask, what exactly is the max number of travelers allowed? Don’t make assumptions. In that case, a bus carrying 19 people isn’t really that intimate compared to one having just eight. You also want to check whether the vehicle comes equipped with amenities like for instance Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and comfy seating. These tiny things really could make such a difference to the enjoyment of a full-day tour.
