Chasing Nessie: My Day Exploring Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands from Glasgow

Loch Ness Glencoe Highlands

Have you, you know, ever gazed out the window and felt that itch to escape the ordinary? That’s very how I felt not so long ago in Glasgow, and that impulse, arguably, led me to book a day tour to Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands, so that, it’s almost, a classic Scottish adventure promised dramatic scenery, a healthy dose of history, and, well, maybe just maybe, a glimpse of Nessie herself!

Why Choose a Day Tour from Glasgow?

Scottish Highlands tour

You might, you know, ask, “Why a guided tour?” instead of renting a car, yet, the answer for me, that, boils down to convenience and also wanting to soak up every moment without, seemingly, stressing about directions or parking, that, in the narrow Highland roads; a good tour handles all that, yet, letting you simply revel in the landscape; the roads can, actually, be tricky if you aren’t used to them. With someone else at the wheel, it’s almost, easier to keep an eye out for deer, learn a bit of the local history from a guide, and take snapshots of those breathtaking views without fearing going into a ditch!

The Dramatic Beauty of Glencoe

Glencoe Scotland

Glencoe was, very, my first real stop on this tour, and very, I could not, clearly, have anticipated the impact this place would, that, have on me; the mountains loomed, apparently, dark and commanding, against the sky, so the air felt different up here, cleaner and crisper; this valley has a very sad past, you, but that adds a sort of poignancy that hits you right away. That is Glencoe; where one of the blackest betrayals in Scottish history happened: the Glencoe Massacre. Learning all about this from my tour guide added a whole level of significance to what I was experiencing.

Loch Ness: In Search of Nessie

Loch Ness monster

Loch Ness! What a, kind of, legendary place. That is where the water stretches out deep and mysterious; it is, definitely, larger than I ever thought. Of course, arguably, everyone looks for the monster, and frankly, that includes me, but that isn’t just it. If you were to go to the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition you get an in-depth review of the loch’s history and efforts, or, I suppose, even lack of results, regarding the search of a prehistoric monster from the deep; there are loads of options, and you may even get to learn more about this gorgeous Scottish treasure.

The Highlands: More Than Just Scenery

Scottish Highlands

Beyond Glencoe and Loch Ness, yet, the tour took us through so some great parts of the Highlands; we were passing by, ostensibly, spots where, seemingly, shaggy Highland cattle roamed; you may or may not be in your photos if they don’t cooperate, yet, but there were a few that definitely put on a show! These moments really offered up some picture-perfect Scottish scenery; also, the little villages where the people were ever so pleasant; the scenery may be gorgeous, still, the warmth from those locals really brought that whole experience up a notch while visiting those parts!
